BLUEPRINT
Roughly Square was founded on the principle of integrating both design, in a studio environment, and making, in the workshop. We embrace the challenge of every project, big or small, with the same intensity and importance. Through rigorous training and continuing education we are familiar with vanishing techniques as well as contemporary practices. With the thirty-plus years combined experience of it's founders, Roughly Square offers an integrated approach to design and making which embraces the past and present.

The name, Roughly Square, was inspired during a renovation of a 1912 bungalow. Upon researching the configuration of its hand-laid, stone foundation we came to find that the pattern was referred to as 'roughly square'. As the renovation progressed, we learned a vital lesson that we still hold true to this day, “Strive for quality and avoid perfection, for your dwelling is one of the last things still made by hand and is only roughly square.” We apply this lesson to each project and believe the integrity of our work resides in the seamless juncture of old and new which appears to have always been present.
