FOUNDERS
Monique Sletta puts the 'roughly' in Roughly Square. She holds a Bachelor of Architecture and Bachelor of Science in Environmental Design. When she is not in the studio designing for a current project, you can find her in the workshop hovering over a hot forge or out salvaging building materials for use in her next furniture piece. Monique's passion for good house design, adaptive reuse and the lifestyle that it inspires came to her in her teens as she renovated cabins by day and, as a good Northern girl would, was fishing by dusk. Raised in a small town in Minnesota, Monique grew akin to the old country farmsteads, the open dirt roads and the do-it-yourself spirit of the Midwest. With this spirit in mind, it has inspired various training in architectural design, hands-on construction, furniture building, stained glass panel construction, woodworking, welding and blacksmithing. Monique has previously worked in two architecture firms and has experience with both commercial and residential projects, including historic renovation as well as new construction. With a particular love for bungalows and the craftsman style, she has not only meticulously renovated two bungalows and called them home but eagerly awaits the next project that she can apply her skills to. With this experience, she understands the need for sympathetic designers that have a 'let it be' attitude for the quirks of old houses as well as an empathy for the way people use their dwellings.

Michael Scanlan puts the 'square' in Roughly Square. Not only is Michael strong-willed and holds true to his ideal but may often be found overlaying a grid onto an existing house plan, deciphering long-lost proportions and maybe even measuring things in the field to the 1/16th of an inch. He holds a Bachelor of Architecture and Bachelor of Science in Environmental Design. When not in the studio, one may find him riding his restored 1950's cruiser bike through the park or pedaling off to make a grocery run. His love for old things is only second-best to his will to bring out the inherent potential in all things around him. As a youngster, Michael traveled frequently about the United States and was inspired by all the ways people adapt to their surroundings and thus create their own unique vernacular. This viewpoint has brought Michael's career to all sides of the globe, studying climate and cultures, and constructing buildings in remote villages as far away as Central Asia. Presently, settled in Minneapolis, he has found a passion for the vast inspiration of the neighborhoods of the Twin Cities. Michael's specialties include interior detailing, construction of interior casework as well as custom residential design. He has an impeccable eye for detail and his 'one more finishing touch' attitude brings a fine quality, boundless ideas and energy to every project.
